How to Live With Lung Problems

Lung problems result in difficulty breathing and are commonly caused by diseases and conditions that affect the lung directly. Lung complications can be challenging and impact daily living greatly. You can do several things to manage lung problems and improve your quality of life.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your doctor about medications and procedures. Depending on the cause of your lung problems, certain medications or procedures can relieve symptoms, treat and prevent complications and possibly reverse damage. You might receive medications that you inhale or take orally. Follow all of your doctor's instructions and do not change or stop your treatment regimen without talking to your physician. Surgical and non-surgical procedures might be able to address your condition as well.

Talk to a respiratory therapist. He can show you breathing exercises and help you design an exercise program that can help you breathe better and improve lung function. Though it might seem odd to recommend exercise for lung problems, it helps increase endurance and strengthens lung function, both of which will facilitate better breathing and help you stay more active.

    • 3

Take a multivitamin or mineral supplement and eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. This will ensure you are getting adequate amounts of nutrients integral to lung health, like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc, selenium, potassium and magnesium.

Manage stress and anxiety. Lung problems can be especially troublesome because of their effect on breathing. This creates stress and anxiety, which only exacerbates the problem. Experiment with different ways to induce relaxation. Some popular ones are yoga, tai chi, meditation, positive imagery, and progressive relaxation. Experiment and stick to methods that you enjoy and find beneficial.

Try a pulmonary rehabilitation program. This program consists of classes that help you learn about your lungs and ways to manage your condition. Your doctor can help you find one. Check with your insurance company about coverage.

    • 6

Keep all appointments and receive necessary tests. Monitoring your lung condition is an important part of managing your condition.
