How to Measure Urinary & Salivary pH

Measuring urinary and salivary pH is a quick and easy, if not consistently accurate, way to monitor body health. An ideal body pH should be around 7.3 to 7.4, though healthy urinary and salivary pHs tend to be more acidic (6.4 to 7.0). However, these two measurements can vary widely, and a reading of highly acidic or alkaline pH in the saliva or urine is not automatically indicative of blood pH. Nevertheless, consistent testing of urinary and salivary pH levels should give you an idea of how acidic or alkaline your body pH is.

Instructions

  1. Salivary Testing

    • 1

Spit into a small, clean container. This can be a small bowl or even a spoon, so long as it does not have anything in it.

    • 2

Touch a pH Hydrion stip to the saliva immediately and wait for it to change color. This should happen very quickly.

    • 3

Refer to your strips' included color chart to determine an approximate pH value of your saliva. Typically, warmer colors indicate acidity, and cooler colors indicate alkalinity.

    • 4

Repeat daily for a week and average the findings.

    Urinary Testing

    • 5

      Urinate into a small container.

    • 6

Dip a pH Hyrdion strip into the urine immediately and wait for it to change color.

    • 7

Refer again to your strips' included color chart.

    • 8

Repeat daily for a week and average the findings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many health food stores and pharmacies will carry pH Hyrdion paper. But if you're having trouble finding it, pool or lab supply stores will almost certainly carry it. If you are still having trouble, see the Resources.

  • As urinary pH levels vary widely from instance to instance, it would behoove you to test more than once daily. For instance, your urinary pH levels will be much more acidic right after you wake up.

  • It is also important to wait two hours after eating, drinking, smoking, or brushing your teeth before testing salivary pH levels. Anything that has been in your mouth could severally alter your salivary pH and give you an incorrect reading. Unlike with urine, the morning is an ideal time to test salivary pH.
