How to Ship a Rocking Chair
-
1
Lock the rocking chair so it doesn't move. Many rocking chairs have a locking mechanism under the chair. If yours doesn't, you will need to either remove the rocker part or otherwise secure the areas of movement. (Note: This advice is for rocking chairs that glide; traditional grandfather rockers generally move the entire chair and won't have pieces moving during shipment.)
-
2
Wrap cardboard around the ends of the rockers on the bottom as well as on the arm rests.
-
-
3
Tape the cardboard securely around the rockers and arm rests being very careful to not get tape on the chair itself. Tape can damage the finish on a rocking chair.
-
4
Place bubble wrap around the chair, making sure to adequately pad the rockers, arm rests and wood trim.
-
5
Wrap the chair with plastic wrap, tightly covering the entire chair and its packaging. Be generous with the wrap to make sure that it is secure and holding the packing materials in place.
-
6
Contact a freight shipper such as Transit Systems, U Ship or Freight Center. You need to know the approximate weight. They can give you a direct quote on shipping the item from one location to the other. Inquire as to whether the chair needs to be in a box or not. If it does, request a box from them. In most cases, you will not need one. Make arrangements for pickup.
-
7
Create a large address label with the shipping and delivery addresses as well as contact phone numbers for you and the recipient. Use packing tape to adhere this to the chair, completely covering the paper so it is water-resistant. (Make sure you are using clear packing tape.)
-
8
Meet the freight shipper for pickup and follow up with the recipient for the arrival time.
