Find the problem spots in your yard. You will need to use a level attached to a 2-by-4 board to do this. Lay it across various parts of your front yard. This will help you to see where there are holes and dips in the grass. It will also help you to see how level the yard is. Keep in mind that the grass next to your home should be leveled away from the structure to help prevent water buildup.

Use a sod cutter to remove the sod on the problem spots in your yard. Cut the sod away from the problem spots, roll it, and stack it away for later use.

With a shovel, rotate the soil. As you do this, add in mixed compost, top soil and a small amount of sand. Rotate thoroughly.

Using the level you attached to the 2-by-4 board, level the soil.

Sod the area again with the sod you set aside before leveling. Be sure to water the sod thoroughly.
