How to Refinish a Bathroom Sink
Replacing a bathroom sink can be expensive, and getting one to fit correctly in the existing opening can involve minor construction. Before you go through all the trouble, try refinishing the old sink. Refinishing a sink is similar to any other painting project--it requires precision and the correct materials. Thin, even coats of paint are critical to your success.

- Electric palm sander
- Sandpaper
- Degreasing cleanser
- Epoxy primer
- Acrylic topcoat
- Paintbrush

Clean the sink thoroughly using a non-abrasive cleanser, then rinse all residue from the surface.

Attach fine-grit sandpaper to the electric palm sander. Sand the interior, rim and edges of the sink with a gentle circular motion. The sander will create a moderately rough surface to allow the paint to adhere solidly.

Wipe dust from the inside of the sink with a rag dipped in water.

Cover the faucets and drain hardware with masking tape.

Apply a light coat of epoxy primer with a high-quality paintbrush. Paint in one direction, avoiding brush marks as much as possible. Allow the primer to dry, then apply a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry completely.

Apply a thin, even layer of acrylic topcoat with a clean brush. Apply up to three coats, allowing each coat to dry between applications.

Pull up the masking tape slowly at a 45-degree angle to avoid peeling up the acrylic.

Do not use the sink for one week to allow the topcoat to set completely. Before using, clean the sink with a mild non-abrasive cleanser; Softscrub gel or Method products work well.

Tips & Warnings
Sand the epoxy coat with fine-grit sandpaper if the epoxy has bumps. Sand lightly and apply an additional coat of epoxy.
Epoxy and acrylic paint contain strong chemicals. Make sure the bathroom is well-ventilated.
