Instructions

    • 1

Place the first plastic cup upside down on a flat surface or board. Place the other cup on top of the first cup. Place the second cup with the opening up, creating a rough hourglass. User super glue to fasten the edges of the cups together. Allow the glue to dry according to manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Use a drill with a 1/16 in. drill bit to drill a hole in the center of the cups. Place a piece of paper underneath the bottom cup. Pour approximately a half of a cup of sand into the top cup. Use a stopwatch to time how long it takes the sand to pass through the hole.

    • 3

Adjust the amount of sand according to the time it took to pass through the cup. For example, if the sand took 47 seconds to pass through the hole, add approximately 1/8 of a cup of sand in the cup. Repeat this step.

    • 4

Remove the sand from the cups once you have the correct amount of sand. Place the cup on a piece of cardboard, and take a permanent marker and outline the cup on the cardboard. Cut out the circle with scissors. Repeat this step for the other side.

    • 5

Place the cups on one piece of cardboard. Use the super glue to glue the bottom side of the two cups to the piece of cardboard. Allow the super glue to dry.

    • 6

Place the sand in the cup that does not have a piece of cardboard covering the opening. Use the super glue to glue down the piece of cardboard to the cup with the opening. Allow the glue to dry.
