Family websites can be a great way to share pictures and news with your family and friends. Making a family Web page is fun to do and does not require any technical skills. You can create a website that is private to your family members or choose to share it with the whole world. Using Google Sites, it is easy and free to create a family web page that your family and friends can enjoy for years.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Point your web browser to "http://sites.google.com." If you have an existing Google or Gmail account, then proceed by typing in your email and password and click the "Sign in" button.

  2. Step 2

Sign up for a new Google account if you don't have one. Below the login area on the right, click on the "Sign up for Sites" link.

  3. Step 3

Fill in the short form. Enter your email address and your password (twice to confirm). Choose your geographical location, enter the letters in the picture, review the terms of service, and click the button labeled "I accept. Create my account."

  4. Step 4

Click the "Create new site" button. It is located on the top left of the screen, once you have entered Google sites.

  5. Step 5

Complete the page with your name you would like for your website and an optional site description. Click the button to choose if you will share the web page with everyone in the world or share only with family and friends whom you specify. Click a button next to a layout to choose a fun theme and family-friendly look for your site, type the code shown, and then click on the "Create site" button.

  6. Step 6

Click the "Edit page" button, located at the top right of your family web page draft. Edit your family web page by typing in the title box and main text box. Provide a descriptive introduction that introduces your family website and write about what information will be presented. For example, you can create individual web pages for each family member along with updates and pictures for each person.

  7. Step 7

Personalize your web page with your family news and pictures. Select your written text and use the buttons on the top left toolbar to edit things like font size, make words bold or italics, or create links to other Web pages. If you profile family members on the web page, then you could add links for more information on their extracurricular activities such as school programs, sports, and plays. You could add an email link to contact the family member.

  8. Step 8

Insert pictures, video, calendar, or other elements to personalize your family web page. Click on the "Insert" link on the top left toolbar and click on the item you want to add to your web page. If adding a picture, click "Insert," and "Image," then "Browse" to locate your picture on your computer, then double-click the file name to add it. For instance, you can create a page with an inserted calendar that highlights upcoming or past family events, and link it to event details along with family pictures and video of the event.

  9. Step 9

Click on the "Save" button on the top right of the page as you are editing, and when you are done making your family web page to save all changes. Be sure to update your family web page with the latest family news and events to keep it fresh. Share your family website with your friends and extended family members through email, phone, or with the "Share" feature on the website.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the page does not move forward on Step 5, then review the top of the page, as you may need to pick another site name if the name is already taken.
  • Add a page for each family member. To add more web pages to your family website, click the "Create page" button on the top right when viewing your web page.
  • To share your new web page with others, click the "More actions" link and then "Share this site." Review the sharing permissions and decide if you want the family website to be private or viewable by anyone in the world. If you are inviting select people to see your website, then enter the email address(es) and click "Invite these people."
  • Use your judgment about what you plan to share about your family with the whole world (or even with just friends and family).
