Adobe Photoshop is a graphics software program that is widely used to enhance and manipulate photographs. It offers users a variety of options, including adding special graphic effects to any picture. This guide will teach you how to easily implement the water effect to a picture with the use of the "Layers" function.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop
  • Image
  1. Step 1

Open a new photograph in the Adobe Photoshop software program. You will see the opened layers palette that contains the background layer of the selected picture.

  2. Step 2

Draw a box around the specific area where you want the water effect by using the rectangular marquee and press "D" to activate default colors.

  3. Step 3

Click "Filter," "Render" and then "Clouds."

  4. Step 4

Duplicate the layer by simultaneously pressing the "Ctrl" button and "J". This will allow you to modify the image easily without making changes to your original picture file.

  5. Step 5

Move the duplicate layer to the top of the clouds layer and click "Edit," "Transform" and "Flip" to turn the layer upside down.

  6. Step 6

Hold the "Alt" button on your keyboard and click in between the two layers to create a clipping layer.

  7. Step 7

Press the "Shift" button and use the down arrow on your keyboard to move the image downward until it appears as a reflection. Release the "Shift" button and use the down arrow to fine-tune your move.

  8. Step 8

Click "Filter," "Distort" and "Ripple" to create a special effect.

  9. Step 9

Select "Blending options" on the clouds layer palette and add a stroke. To set the gradient to transparent -> black, click on the "Gradient" bar to open up the gradient editor. Set both colors to black, and set the opacity on the left-hand side to 0, like in the below diagram.

  10. Step 10

Activate the position to "outside" and fill type to gradient, the opacity to about 40%, and choose a transparent black gradient.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fine tune the photo by using the eraser tool with the small brush to color in places that may appear as shadows.
  • Create new layers as necessary to make changes to your opacity and colors and tweak the shadows in your photo.
  • If you don't like the effect of your picture, delete the layer, create a new one and fine tune as necessary.
