How to Make Espresso in a Stove Top Pot
Just because you don't have an espresso maker on hand doesn't mean that you can't have espresso or have to go out to a coffee shop to get one. Rich, strong espresso is the product of water being strained through roasted and ground beans, as with coffee. The stove top espresso maker, also known as a macchinetta, is a convenient and far less expensive alternative to an electronic espresso maker. Does this Spark an idea?

Unscrew the top of the espresso maker. Inside, you should find a funnel filter, a gasket and a filter plate. Remove the funnel filter from the bottom half of the device. Fill the bottom chamber with water up to the steam release valve. The steam release valve is the small knob-like thing near the top of the bottom chamber.

Replace the funnel filter and fill it with ground coffee. Level it off at the top.

Make sure that the gasket and filter plate are in their proper places. They should be positioned underneath the top half of the espresso maker, at the bottom. The filter plate should be sandwiched between the top half and the gasket.

Screw the two halves together.

Turn the heat to medium on your stove. Place the espresso maker over the heat.

When you hear a gurgling sound, remove the espresso maker from heat. Pour out the espresso from the top chamber.

Tips & Warnings
The stove top espresso maker can also be used on a rack over a camp fire, when there is no electricity.
Don't tamp or press down the ground coffee after you have filled the funnel filter. This could prevent the steam from reaching the top chamber and make the pressure in the bottom chamber increase too much, causing the steam release valve to blow.
