Making your own reindeer shaped cookie cutters can provide years of baking memories. The reindeer is a great symbol of the Christmas holiday and is popular among both kids and adults. Designing your own cookie cutters instead of buying them can also be a great project and making the cookies can be the best part. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Thin aluminum or copper metal sheet
- Waxy lubricant for the saw blades
- Piece of particle board or plywood
- Work gloves
- Fine toothed crosscut carbide blade mounted backwards
- Clean cloth
- Sandpaper
- Small welding torch
Instructions
-
-
1
Put the aluminum or copper metal sheet flat onto the table surface where you will be cutting.
-
2
Place a piece of particle board or plywood underneath the metal to ease the cutting process. Rub the waxy lubricant around the edge of the blade's surface where you will be cutting before you begin to allow a smoother cutting process with the blade against the sheet metal.
-
-
3
Put on your protective gloves and firmly apply pressure onto the metal sheet and slowly use the crosscut carbide blade to cut thin strips, 1-inch wide and about 12 inches in length.
-
4
Wipe off any excess particles of metal that may remain on the metal strip's surface with a semi-damp cloth. Wash the strips with dish-washing soap and a sponge. If the edges are a bit serrated, use a rough type of sandpaper to smooth them.
-
5
Using the reindeer shape shown on Reindeer Cookie Cutters (see references), form and mold the metal strips to emulate that design or search for other reindeer shapes to use. You can print out a copy of the image to use as a template.
-
6
Use a small welding torch to connect the ends of the metal strips to retain the reindeer cookie cutter shape.

Tips & Warnings
Cut the sheet metal outdoors for a larger cutting area and safety if the weather permits.
Use adult supervision if a child is planning to form the reindeer shaped cookie cutter.
Use goggles, gloves and a mouth mask to protect your eyes and hands and to prevent inhaling any metal particles when using the crosscut carbide blade.
