Things You'll Need:

  • internet connection
  • notebook and pen
  • digital camera
  • transportation to auto dealerships
  1. Step 1

Research the type of car desired online. Do not decide on a specific model, but consider many models of the same type of vehicle to most accurately compare car quotes. Many car models are quite similar.

  2. Step 2

Collect car quotes online. Visit as many websites of auto dealerships in the area to find the largest amount of the same type of car as possible. Be sure to print out quotes to bring to dealerships. It's also helpful to write down the name and location of different cars in a notebook.

  3. Step 3

Find auto insurance quotes online to match with car quotes collected. While many different car models are similar, the cost of insuring one over the other may be substantially different. To find how to shop for online auto insurance quotes, see resources, below.

  4. Step 4

Go to different auto dealerships to physically inspect prospective vehicles in order to compare car quotes. When visiting dealerships, be sure to take pictures of prospective vehicles and make notes about the cars in the notebook previously used to collect online research. Especially make note of dents, scratches, and any other anomalies visually noticed, including power or manual windows ans whether the cars are automatic transmission or stick shift.

  5. Step 5

Test drive vehicles to compare how the cars drive and operate. Ensure that cars considered for purchased are worth the cost by having a mechanic inspect vehicles prior to serious consideration of purchase.

  6. Step 6

Compare car quotes by comparing all information collected about each vehicle. Make a final decision by weighing pros and cons of each vehicle considered and finding the best value.

Tips & Warnings
  • After you compare car quotes, you can use your research to get a lower price on the car you want. If you find a comparable car for a lower price, be sure to discuss with the auto dealership salesperson to negotiate a better price on the car that you love.
