Step 1
Download a Joomla 1.5 template from a Joomla template website. There are some websites that charge a fee for Joomla templates and some websites that have free Joomla templates. Make sure to keep the Joomla template as a zip file. Do NOT extract the zip file.

Go to your Joomla administrator panel. Select "extensions" and "install/uninstall".

Towards the top of the page will say "upload package file". Click "browse" and select the zip file containing your Joomla template. Select "upload file and install". Once it has finished installing, you should get a blue bar towards the top of the screen that says "install template success".

Go to "extensions" and select "template manager". Click on the radio button next to the name of the Joomla template that you just installed. Click the default star icon on the upper right of the screen.

To preview the changes to your Joomla template, click on the radio button next to the name of your newly installed Joomla template. Click the edit icon on the upper right of the screen. Click the preview icon on the upper right of your screen and you should now have a preview showing your newly uploaded Joomla 1.5 template.
