Things You'll Need:
- Lip Balm
- Scarf
-
Step 1
Moisturize lips daily with a natural sealant such as beeswax lip balm or petroleum jelly. This is especially important when outdoor activities are planned. Natural ingredients will not only protect the skin, but help prevent irritation to already chapped lips from dyes and perfumes.
-
Step 2
Protect lips from extreme weather. A scarf isn’t just to keep the neck warm. Wearing a scarf over the mouth in cold and windy weather will prevent excessive drying.
-
Step 3
Avoid licking chapped lips. A natural reaction to wet dry lips is to lick them. While this will temporarily wet the lips and make them feel moist, it inevitably leads to drier lips after evaporation.
-
Step 4
Breathe through the nose as much as possible. Winter is usually cold and flu season which leads to stuffy noses and mouth-breathing. The constant air flow created by breathing excusively through the mouth will exacerbate chapped lip problems.
-
Step 5
Don’t pick or peel flaking skin on the lips. This not only removes the natural skin protection, it can lead to cracking or open sores that may invite infection.
-
Step 6
Drink plenty of water. During the winter, the air is usually drier leading to dry skin. Staying hydrated will help prevent dry skin and chapped lips.
