If you are requesting financial aid for education purposes, writing a hardship letter may increase your chances of receiving assistance in the form of books, tuition, etc.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Word document program
  • Paper
  • Printer
  • Sample hardship letter format
  1. Step 1

    First determine the proper financial department and contact person to send your hardship letter requesting tuition assistance.

  2. Step 2

    It is acceptable to process your hardship letter on computer but sending in a typed version with your signature could prove advantageous.

  3. Step 3

    Then begin your letter with a brief statement of why you would like to attend that particular school and the educational path you have chosen if you already know.

  4. Step 4

    Next give a brief explanation of your current financial situation and more importantly your specific need for assistance in order to attend their university. Explain the reasons for your hardship and include what steps you are currently taking to pay for tuition.

  5. Step 5

    End your hardship letter with a statement summarizing your interest in attending their program and how their tuition assistance would be much appreciated.

  • Be brief but specific in regards to your tuition assistance needs.
  • Be very thorough when describing your particular hardship and any steps you have taken to help your own situation.
