How to Import Contacts From Outlook Into Thunderbird

If you've wanted to switch your email client from Microsoft Outlook to the open-source Mozilla Thunderbird, but feel tied down to Outlook because your contacts are stored there, don't worry: you can quickly and easily import your Outlook contacts into Thunderbird. In fact, the Mozilla team designed Thunderbird to make this as easy as possible. This gives you the freedom to choose your email client of choice---and freedom is a beautiful thing.

  • Open the Import wizard in Thunderbird. Click "Tools," then "Import."

  • Select "Address Books" as the thing you'd like to import, then click "Next."

  • Select "Outlook" as the program you'd like to import contacts from, then click "Next." After the importing process is complete you'll be told so; click "Finish."

  • Make sure your contacts were imported properly. Click "Tools," then "Address Book." You should see all of your contacts listed here; if not, repeat the above steps, making sure you import from the correct program--Outlook and Outlook Express are different, for example.
