How to Know If a Dimmer Switch Broken

A dimmer switch is a light switch that, in addition to turning a light on or off like an ordinary switch, allows you to vary the brightness of the light bulb. A common type of dimmer switch uses a knob to control the light, though some have an on-off button and separate switch for dimming. Knob style dimmer switches are turned on and off by either pressing the knob or by turning the knob to the right until you hear a lick. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the dimmer switch. You should see a knob on the dimmer switch plate. If all you see is a small 1- to 2-inch metal pin or rod coming out of the switch plate then the knob is broken. Even though the dimmer is broken, it may be possible to push the pin to turn the light off and on. You may be able to rotate the pin clockwise or counterclockwise to vary the light brightness.

Ensure the dimmer control is not off. Place it at the highest setting and turn on the dimmer switch. If the light comes, on the dimmer switch works.

    • 3

Take out the light bulb in the light fixture that doesn't work and is controlled by the dimmer switch. Replace the bulb. If the new bulb lights, the dimmer switch works.

    • 4

Compare the dimmer switch specifications (range of wattage and voltage) with light bulbs in the fixture. Ensure the bulbs meet the dimmer specifications.

    • 5

Test the dimmer switch with incandescent bulbs, if fluorescent and LED light bulbs are being used. Often these other types of bulbs do not work well or at all with dimmer switches. If the incandescent bulbs work, the dimmer switch works.

    • 6

Read the light fixture instructions. Some fixtures do not work on dimmer switches.

    • 7

Replace the dimmer switch with a standard non-dimmer light switch (See the link in Reference). If the new light switch works, the dimmer switch is broken. If the new light switch does not work, there is a problem with the circuit.
