Things You'll Need:
- Citrus plant fertilizer or 16-20-0 fertilizer
- Rake
-
Step 1
Measure the circumference of the tree by wrapping a measuring tape around the trunk at a point about 6 inches above the ground.
-
Step 2
Calculate the amount of fertilizer needed by dividing the circumference of the tree in inches by four. For example, if the circumference of the tree is 6 inches, divide six by four to arrive at 1.5. The total is the amount of fertilizer needed in pounds. In this example, 1 1/2 pounds of fertilizer will be required for a tree with a trunk circumference of 6 inches.
-
Step 3
Spread the fertilizer evenly around the base of the tree, out as far as the edge of the longest branches.
-
Step 4
Rake the fertilizer into the soil, working it into the top 1/4 inch of soil.
-
Step 5
Water the tree immediately after applying the fertilizer to help it mix with the soil and prevent it from blowing away.
-
Step 6
Repeat the feeding every February, May and August.
