Instructions

  1. Starting Your Mimosa Tree

    • 1

Combine equal amounts of sand and potting soil to prepare the soil mixture.

    • 2

Cut the drinking cups to about three inches tall and punch holes in the bottom for drainage. Fill the cups with the soil.

    • 3

Obtain mimosa seeds. Either take a seed pod from a parent tree or purchase from a garden center or seed company.

    • 4

Split open the seed pod to retrieve the seeds. They will be bean-like, brown and hard. Ensure that the seeds are free from damage or disease. Dispose of the empty pod.

    • 5

Pour near-boiling water in a bowl and submerge the seeds. Leave them overnight to scarify them, thereby improving the chances of germination.

    • 6

Plant the freshly treated seeds by placing one seed approximately one inch deep in each cup. Cover with the soil mixture and water lightly. Repeat this for as many seeds as you want.

    • 7

Put each cup in a medium-sized, zip-top plastic bag, seal it, and place it in warm area to encourage the seeds to germinate. Keep the soil damp but not wet.

    • 8

Check the mimosa seeds for signs of growth after about two or three weeks. Remove the bag once the seeds have sprouted. After the seedlings have three to four leaves on them, transplant each to a larger pot.
