How to Build a Custom Wood Box

If you're searching for a storage piece that doesn't look out of place in your home, building a custom wooden box is a practical and cost-effective solution. Store your items in the box, and decorate it to complement your room decor. These steps will walk you through a square cedar box; you can adjust the measurements or type of lumber to fit your room.

Instructions

  Place one of the 24-by-24-inch pieces of cedar on a flat surface. This is the bottom of the box.

  Place one of the 24-by-22-inch pieces of cedar on top of the box bottom at one edge, forming a right angle or "L" shape. Check that the angle is 90 degrees with the carpenter's square and screw the pieces together.

  Repeat on the other side of the box bottom with the second 24-by-22-inch piece of cedar.

  Place the two pieces of 22-by-22-inch cedar on top of the bottom piece, forming right angles along the two remaining open sides. These pieces should fit in between the two side pieces you already attached. Square them to the bottom and the sides with the carpenter's square and screw them into the bottom and the existing sides.

  Place the two pieces of 2-by-22-inch wood on the flat side of the remaining 24-by-24-inch piece of cedar. Set them 1 inch in from each side, centered vertically. Screw these pieces to the piece of cedar to form the box top. Place the top on the box so that the extra pieces of wood are on the inside; they will help keep you from knocking off the box top accidentally.

Tips & Warnings

Cedar is not the only type of wood you can use. Other types, like pine or red wood will give the box a different look.
Make sure the sides sit on top of the bottom piece, or the box will not fit together correctly.
