Thyme is a small low-growing herb native to the Mediterranean region. It produces delicate pink or purple blooms atop its miniature grayish-green leaves. Used to season tomato dishes, soups, stews and meats, thyme enhances natural flavors in root vegetables and blends well with cheeses and eggs. Thyme only requires a little water to thrive in your garden.

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden hose
  • Sprayer attachment
  1. Step 1

Plant thyme in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Although it will tolerate drought conditions, thyme will not tolerate soggy soil.

  2. Step 2

Water thyme when soil is dry to the touch. Generally, normal rainfall is sufficient for thyme, but it will benefit from occasional watering during periods of drought. Use the sprayer attachment to your hose and wet the soil to a depth of 2 to 4 inches.

  3. Step 3

Water in the early morning. Watering during the heat of the day wastes water, as it will evaporate quickly in the sun. Morning air is also calm with less wind to carry the spray of water to other areas. If you must water in the evening, do so early enough for foliage to dry before nightfall. Cool, damp foliage invites disease.

  4. Step 4

Maintain once a month watering during winter months in areas where winters are bare.
