How to Treat Crohn's Disease With Colostrum

Crohn's disease inflames the digestive tract's lining and causes symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, ulcers and blood in the stool. It can also result in malnutrition, kidney stones and osteoporosis. Colostrum is an alternative treatment that you may choose to use to treat this disease. Bovine colostrum is the milk that cows produce after giving birth. This milk, as opposed to regular milk, contains immunoglobulins that are believed to stimulate and strengthen the immune system. If you have Crohn's disease, do not disregard your conventional treatment. Try using colostrum in conjunction with your doctor's treatment plan.

Instructions

    • 1

Check with your doctor about the safety of taking colostrum, especially if you have lactose intolerance. After your doctor tells you it is safe for you to take colostrum, purchase it in the dairy section of a health food store. You can also take colostrum as a supplement.

    • 2

Follow the directions on the product you purchase. Different brands may have different product strengths. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

    • 3

Record any side effects you experience. According to RxList.com (see Reference 1), there is an insufficiency of evidence, safety evaluations and clinical research regarding the use of bovine colostrum for treating human medical conditions. Some people (particularly HIV/AIDS patients) have experienced nausea, vomiting and decreased red blood cell counts and had abnormal liver function test results after taking colostrum.

Decrease your dosage if you experience side effects and consult with your doctor about whether you should continue to use colostrum. It may also be helpful for you and your doctor to record whether your symptoms improve after you take colostrum.

Tips & Warnings

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should never take colostrum. While mad cow disease apparently does not transfer through milk, to be cautious you may wish to avoid products from countries that have experienced incidences of the disease.
