How to Cook an Egg in a Double Boiler

Eggs are an economical food that can be prepared in countless ways by gourmet cooks and novices alike. Scrambling is one of the most popular ways to prepare an egg. For perfect scrambled eggs with a creamy texture, slow cooking at a low temperature is the best choice. A double boiler, designed to put hot water between the heat source and the cooking surface, is an excellent tool to use for scrambled eggs. Things You'll Need

  • Double boiler
  • 1-2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1-4 eggs
  • Medium-sized bowl
  • Whisk
  • Salt
  • Ground pepper
  • Wooden fork or spoon or heatproof rubber spatula

Instructions

    • 1

      Place 1 inch of water into the bottom section of the double boiler.
      Place the bottom section of the double boiler on a stove burner, and heat until the water boils.
      Reduce the burner's heat until the water is simmering.

      Place the top of the double boiler onto the bottom section and add one tablespoon of butter. Heat until melted.

      Crack one to four eggs into a medium bowl while the butter is melting, and whisk until combined.
      Cut 1/4 to 1 tablespoon of butter into small pieces and add to the egg mixture.
      Add seasoning, such as salt and ground pepper, as desired.

      Pour the mixture into the top section of the double boiler.
      Stir the egg mixture with a wooden fork or spoon or a heatproof rubber spatula, until the egg starts to form thick curds. This will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
      Scrape the side of the double boiler with the utensil if the egg begins to stick.
