How to Use a Treadmill While Pregnant

Women who remain somewhat active during pregnancy can experience fewer pregnancy symptoms, such as swelling, fatigue, leg cramps and back pain. There is also a lesser risk of delivery complications, and women who exercise during pregnancy may be able to recover from the delivery more quickly. Excess weight gain can be dangerous to both mom and her unborn baby because of the increased risk of pregnancy complications, or conditions such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. Too little weight gain can also be dangerous if mom and baby are not getting enough nutrients. To maintain a healthy weight balance, it is safe to walk moderately on a treadmill with a doctor's approval.

      Ask your doctor if it is safe for you to use a treadmill during your pregnancy. It may not be safe for women with pregnancy complications to use a treadmill. On the other hand, if you exercised on a regular basis before getting pregnant, it is usually safe to continue that exercise while pregnant (even running).

      Walk at a moderate pace on the treadmill for about 20 or 30 minutes at a time. Try to take several short walks a day instead of one long walk.

      Do not push your body to walk more than is comfortable. Listen to your body's cues and get off the treadmill when you feel tired.

      Use the handrails on the treadmill. Your center of gravity changes while you are pregnant, so it is important to hold onto the rails for balance.

  • If you are accustomed to walking or running strenuously on the treadmill, lower your exertion level slightly to ensure safety. Always listen to your body, and slow down or stop if you become uncomfortable, fatigued or experience pain.

  • Monitor your heart rate while exercising so you can keep your doctor informed of your progress.

  • Do not attempt to exercise if your doctor has told you not to do so.

  • Do not exercise as a way to lose weight while you are pregnant. Exercise for basic health reasons only.
