How to Soak an Ingrown Toenail
Ingrown nails occur when the edge of a nail grows into the skin rather than out of the skin as it would naturally. An ingrown toenail is often painful, and infection may occur where the toenail has pierced the skin. Soaking a painful ingrown toenail can help soothe your discomfort and may speed the healing process. This home treatment can be effective, but you should consult a doctor if you experience swelling or if the wound begins to drain pus.

1
Fill a small plastic tub with enough warm water to cover the affected toenail. The basin should be large enough for you to place your entire foot inside.
-
2
Set the tub in front of a comfortable chair. While sitting, place your foot in the water. Be sure the ingrown toenail is completely submerged.
-
-
3
Relax for approximately 15 minutes with your foot in the water. The warm water will help soften the toenail so that you can lift the nail off of the skin and allow it to grow out.
-
4
Remove your foot from the tub and dry it off with a clean towel. Gently attempt to wedge a cotton ball underneath the toenail where it is ingrown. Leave the cotton ball in place until you are ready to soak the toenail again.
-
5
Repeat the foot baths two or three times a day, using a fresh cotton ball after each foot bath. If the pain still persists after three days, contact your doctor for additional treatment.
