Potpourri is a nice addition to a home's decor. Potpourri pellets can be used in a potpourri burner to create a scented steam that serves as an air freshener. Decorative potpourri consists of nuts, flowers, seed pods, leaves and other organic items that are scented and placed around the home to freshen the air. Potpourri is not only long-lasting, but it's visually appealing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Potpourri (for a potpourri burner)
  • Spoon
  • Potpourri burner
  • Water
  • Votive candle
  • Lighter or matches
  • Decorative potpourri
  • Decorative bowl
  • Scented oil

Air Freshener Using Potpourri and a Potpourri Burner

  1. Step 1

Purchase potpourri pellets designed for use with a potpourri burner and place a few spoonfuls of potpourri inside the bowl resting on the top of the potpourri burner (also called a potpourri simmering pot).

  2. Step 2

Add a bit of water, filling the bowl containing the potpourri pellets.

  3. Step 3

Light a votive candle and place it on the bottom tier of the potpourri burner. The flame will heat the bowl above, and the water containing the scented potpourri pellets will emit a scented steam.

  4. Step 4

Place the potpourri burner in a well-visible location that's clear of any combustible items. Allow the candle to burn until the scent fills the room.

  5. Air Freshener Using Decorative Potpourri and Scented Oils

  6. Step 1

Place a handful (or more, depending upon the size of the bowl) of decorative unscented potpourri inside a bowl or tray. Unscented potpourri can be purchased at the store or made at home using dried flowers, seed pods, and dried leaves.

  7. Step 2

Sprinkle a few drops of scented oil onto the potpourri. For a weaker scent, use just a couple drops; for a stronger scent, use five or more drops.

  8. Step 3

Place the potpourri dish on a coffee table, on the bathroom counter, on your bedroom dresser or in another location of your choice. Place the potpourri dish near a window where it will receive direct sunlight for an even stronger scent.

  9. Step 4

Add a few additional drops of oil as the scent diminishes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always supervise a burning candle.
  • Never allow the potpourri burner bowl to go dry. You risk setting the potpourri pellets on fire.
  • Place potpourri burners and decorative potpourri in a location that cannot be accessed by children and pets.
