How to Get Rid of a Mildew Smell on a Hot Tub Cover

Hot tub covers typically gather mildew from one of two sources: rain or condensation from the hot tub. Condensation will attract mildew on the bottom of the cover, and rain attracts it on the top. The mildew smell is noticeable before the mildew can be spotted. As soon as that fragrance-of-fungi smell develops, you know it is past time to remove the hot tub cover and clean it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hard brush or broom
  • Lemon juice
  • Salt
  • Bowl
  • Cloth
  1. Step 1

Remove the cover from the hot tub.

  2. Step 2

Unzip the cover to allow air flow into the foam inserts.

  3. Step 3

Use a hard brush or broom to sweep the surface of the cover. This will remove any possible mildew particles that have formed.

  4. Step 4

Pour lemon juice into a bowl and add salt. The amount is not important. The salt will act as an abrasive to remove mildew molecules from the cover.

  5. Step 5

Wipe the cover down with a cloth dipped in the lemon-salt solution.

  6. Step 6

Place the cover outside in the sunlight. If your cover bends in half, create a tent out of it; otherwise, lean the cover against a wall. In either case, be sure air can flow over both sides of the cover. Leave the cover outside in the direct sunlight for several hours to dry off completely.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is a good idea to clean your hot tub cover once every two weeks to prevent the buildup of mildew.
