How to Season a Cigar Humidor
Humidors are wooden boxes used to prolong the life of cigars and cigarettes. A properly working humidor can preserve a cigar for many years, which lets the cigar's flavor age and mature. They work by keeping the humidity in the box at a high enough level, so that the cigars cannot dry out. Humidors must be seasoned before they can preserve cigars. The walls of an unseasoned humidor may actually suck the moisture out of a cigar.

1
Dampen a clean washcloth with distilled water. If water drips from the cloth, wring it out until it is slightly moist.
-
2
Wipe the entire inside of the humidor with the damp cloth. Be sure to wipe along each crevice and corner. If the humidor has a shelf, wipe that down as well. Take your time with this step, as it is important for the inside walls to have moisture.

3
Remove the small humidifier from the humidor and fill it with distilled water. Wipe any spilled water off of the humidifier and place it back in the humidor. If any water spills inside the humidor, do your best to wipe it up.
-
4
Close the lid to the humidor and let it sit overnight.
-
5
Check the reading on the humidor's hygrometer the following day. The ideal humidity level is between 68 and 72 percent. If the reading is 68 or below, wipe the entire inside of the humidor as in Step 2 and wait one more day. When the hygrometer has a reading between 68 and 72 for two consecutive days, the humidor is safe to use.

Tips & Warnings
Keep the humidor in a spot away from sunlight, air vents, open windows, air conditioners and electric heaters. All of these things can change the humidity level inside the humidor, which in turn can effect the quality of your cigars. Desk drawers and closets are good places to keep a humidor.
