Cacti are known to be resilient plants. Not all cacti have flowers that bloom because some cacti are self-pollinating. The flowers are usually on the plant for short periods, in some cases blooming only for an evening. Proper care of your cactus that blooms will help it give flowers more often.

• Washed sand
• Gravel/pebbles

How to Care for a Cactus Flower

1. Mix potting soil with washed sand and gravel in equal parts.

2. Plant the cactus in the soil mixture.

3. Place a large rock near the cactus to help it maintain heat during cold winter nights and cool off during the summer heat, thus requiring less water.

4. Water your cactus once a month. Adjust watering depending on the climate and where you have the plant--potted plants require more water than ground cacti.

5. Keep indoor cacti near a window to get ample light.

Tips & Warnings

• To check if your potted cactus needs water, stick a pencil in the soil and see if it comes out clean. If it does, water it.
