How to Use a Toddler Hip Carrier

Many parents realize the value of carrying babies frequently and keeping them close, as it keeps babies and toddlers safe and content. For a toddler, sitting on a parent's hip is the perfect place to be. It enables the toddler to see what the parent is doing while feeling safe and secure. But for parents, carrying a heavy toddler on one hip can be exhausting. Baby carriers designed to carry a toddler on one hip are the answer to this problem. Most of these carriers include a waist belt to distribute the toddler's weight onto the parent's hips, a pocket or seat for the child to sit in, and a shoulder strap to hold the toddler against the parent's body. Popular versions include the Ellaroo Mei Hip Baby Carrier and the Scootababy Baby Carrier.

Instructions

    • 1

Buckle the waist belt of the carrier around your hips with the carrier seat centered over the hip where you want your baby to sit. Make sure the buckle is securely fastened according to the directions for your specific carrier. The waist buckle should rest on your hips, not your waist, and it should be snug enough that you can't easily move it. This will ensure that your child's weight is evenly distributed over your hips instead of your back.

    • 2

Place your child in the carrier. Set him on your hip in a natural carrying position.

    • 3

While holding your baby with one hand, use the other hand to pull the carrier seat fabric up around your baby. Bounce your baby a little to make sure she is firmly settled into the carrier seat.

    • 4

Hold your baby with one hand and use your other hand to pull the shoulder strap over your shoulder. It should go over the shoulder on the opposite side of the hip where your baby is sitting.

    • 5

Buckle the shoulder strap securely. Make sure you follow all carrier directions to ensure the buckle is securely fastened.

    • 6

Tighten the shoulder strap until it is snug and secure by lifting your baby with one arm and tightening the strap with the other hand. The carrier should hold your baby close against your body.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not wear your baby on your hip until he has good head control, around five or six months old.

  • Always check that all buckles and straps are securely fastened.

  • Always inspect the seams and buckles of your carrier before use.

  • Hip carriers are designed for use with your child facing toward your body, not facing out.

  • Use caution when bending down: crouch, don't bend over, as your baby could fall out the top of the carrier.

  • Do not cook or drink hot liquids while wearing your baby.
