Dog's make loyal pets and are sure to leave an impression on both your family and your home. As enjoyable as a dog is, it can also require a good deal of work, especially in terms of cleaning your home. If your dog tends to drool a lot, like a Newfoundland or St. Bernard, cleaning saliva from your furniture is something you will do often. Proper and regular cleaning should help keep your furniture in tip top condition despite the amount of saliva it encounters.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Furniture cleaner
  • Color safe cloth
  • Furniture polish
  • Glass cleaner
  1. Step 1

Keep supplies on hand to clean your furniture so you are ready to clean up your dog's saliva as soon as you notice it. Supplies to have ready include a color safe cloth and a dog-safe furniture cleaner. A number of different cleaners on the market are designed to clean up pet stains on both carpet and furniture. Make sure to test the cleaner on a hidden part of your coach, sofa or chair fabric to make sure it does not alter its color.

  2. Step 2

Prepare to clean the dog saliva off the fabric of your furniture the moment you notice it. The sooner you clean it, the less likely this lubricant-like substance is to penetrate your fabric and the easier it should be to remove. Spray the area of the fabric where the saliva occurred. Allow the spray several minutes to penetrate the soiled area, and gently rub it off with a color-safe cloth. Wet the color-safe cloth, and gently press it into the freshly cleaned area to soak up any excess cleaner. Allow the area to dry before sitting on the furniture.

  3. Step 3

Clean saliva off of wood, metal or glass furniture by wetting a color-safe cloth, and gently rubbing it on the saliva until it is removed. Follow up by using furniture polish or glass cleaner on the area.

  4. Step 4

Try to remember the typical areas where your dog salivates on your furniture, and check those areas often to make sure they are clean. The last thing you will want is to have company come over and sit on a saliva-stained spot you were not aware of.

  5. Step 5

Once a year professionally clean your couches, chairs and love seats where saliva commonly occurs. Many carpet cleaning companies offer furniture cleaning services for a small fee. Cleaning your items professionally will help eliminate any odors that may have seeped into your furniture via saliva before you had a chance to clean it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Preventing your dog from getting up on your couch should decrease the incidences of his leaving saliva on it.
