The shabby chic look has taken the interior decorating world by storm. The look encompasses antiques and well-worn furniture with whites and bright pastel accents. The design first got its fame from Rachel Ashwell with her book titled "Shabby Chic". One way to enjoy the look of shabby chic in your home is by decorating at Christmas time with a shabby chic-themed tree.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Decoupaged ornaments
  • Scissors
  • Victorian-themed cutouts from magazines or postcards
  • Decoupage glue
  • ½ inch white ribbon
  • Large white poster board
  • Paintbrush
  • Silver, gold or pastel acrylic paint
  • Christmas tree (live or faux)
  • Clear or pastel colored lights
  • White or pastel colored ribbon cut into 4-inch bows
  • Ribbon or faux pearl garland
  • Vintage ornaments
  • Antique doll or tree topper of your choice
  • 4 yards of Vintage or pastel fabric

    Making Homemade Decoupaged Ornaments

  1. Step 1

Locate vintage or Victorian-inspired prints. Utilize old postcards or pictures out of Victoria magazine. Avoid cutting out the background and focus on individual objects such as a Santa Claus, Victorian girl, sled, animal or Victorian flower. It's OK to mix and match, but keep to one theme so the tree will appear more uniform. Cut around each object. Choose a variety of sizes to add variations to the tree.

  2. Step 2

Lay out a poster board. Arrange the pictures on the board and use up every square inch of space to avoid wasting the board.

  3. Step 3

Trace out each picture. Use smooth-edge designs. Do not cut angle for angle. Leave 1/4 inch of space around the picture for the hole punch. Cut out the designs. Punch holes at the top of each design.

  4. Step 4

Use decoupage glue to adhere the picture to the photo board cut-outs. After they are on, apply the decoupage to the front of the ornaments. Allow to dry.

  5. Step 5

Add a thin layer of paint around edging of the ornament. Allow to dry. Add the ribbon and tie into a large bow so it can be hung on the tree.

  6. How to Decorate Your Tree Shabby Chic

  7. Step 1

Choose a location to display the tree -- preferably near an entryway or a window.

  8. Step 2

Hang lights from the tree. Choose white or colors that are light and not bright. Popular shabby chic colors are mint green, light pink and light yellow. Try to wrap the lights around each branch to secure.

  9. Step 3

Wrap a garland around the tree. Choose velvet, pearls, lace or silk ribbons. Make sure they match or correlate with the color theme of your tree.

  10. Step 4

Add ornaments to the tree. Accent the tree with vintage toys and ornaments that are light in color. Mix and match with new ornaments that may have a Victorian, shabby chic or feminine theme.

  11. Step 5

Apply the tree topper. If using a vintage Santa or doll, secure underneath with zip ties or ribbon. Use a piece of floral, striped or pastel fabric as the tree skirt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Mix and match old and new ornaments.
  • Try to decorate in white as much as possible for the background colors and accent with pastels.
  • Decorate this tree throughout the year using different holiday-themed ornaments such as Easter or Valentine's Day.
  • Use caution with using electrical items such as Christmas lights in combination with a live tree --- this may pose as a fire hazard. Never leave the home unattended when the tree is lit.
