How to Use Foam Earplugs
An earplug is a small foam device which inserts into the ear and protects against elements such as wind, storm debris and water. Earplugs also protect against loud noises. Earplugs are available at any drug or department store, and are easy to insert and use. Because foam earplugs collect ear wax buildup and germs that can lead to an ear infection, dispose of them after two or three uses.

1
Purchase foam earplugs from your local department or drug store. Purchase a box containing several sets if you plan on using ear plugs for an extended period or ongoing activity. If you plan to use your earplugs for one event only (such as noise protection from a flight) then one set is enough.
-
2
Using your cotton swabs, gently wipe the perimeter inside each ear and around the ear canal. Do not enter the ear canal with the cotton swab, as damage to this sensitive area can cause hearing loss.

3
Check that each earplug is clean and debris-free.
-
4
Insert an earplug directly into one ear. Slowly and gently press the foam to fit inside your ear canal. Do not press too hard, as this may cause discomfort.
-
5
Ensure that enough of the earplug is protruding from the ear canal so that you can easily remove the earplug.
-
6
Insert the second earplug into your other ear. Gently and slowly work the ear plug into your ear canal and leave enough of the foam earplug out of your ear canal for easy removal.
-
7
Remove the earplugs when you are finished with your activity. Wipe them down with a clean tissue and remove any wax buildup. Store them in a plastic ziplock bag if you plan to use them again, or discard them if you have completed your activity.
