Choosing the right sunscreen can help prevent Melasma

Melasma is a nagging – but not harmful – skin condition that causes darkening of the skin in certain places. Usually it occurs on the face, which can make its sufferers self-conscious. While common Melasma treatments include skin lightening creams like hydroquinone, this is a case where an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure. Because this condition is made worse by exposure to the sun, one of the best ways of preventing Melasma is the regular use of sunscreen. Choosing the best sunscreen for Melasma will go a long way in preventing its effects.

Things You'll Need:

  • A sunscreen with the right ingredients. See suggestions in the resources section below.
  1. Step 1

Choose sunscreen with a high SPF.

It’s important to get a sunscreen with a high enough SPF to prevent sun damage. In most cases the SPF should be at least 15, although some dermatologists recommend you go even higher.

  2. Step 2

Select a sunscreen with a physical blocker.

SPFs work by blocking sun chemically, but physical blockers are helpful as well. Two examples are zinc oxide (think of the white stuff you wore on your nose at the pool as a kid) or titanium oxide.

  3. Step 3

    Apply sunscreen regularly.

Even the smallest amount of sun exposure can exacerbate Melasma so it is important to wear sunscreen at all times if you are going to be in the sun. This includes sun exposure through car windows and even house or office windows. You don’t need to be basking on a beach in order to wear sunscreen.
