You can save file space and eliminate your internet trail at the same time on Internet Explorer. To get rid of your internet browsing history list (the URL drop down) or temporary files on your computer, you use the same menu commands from Internet Explorer. Keep in mind that temporary page files may increase speed in which pages re-load if you wish to return to them soon. Another temporary file you may want to get rid of is called cookies, which are created by web pages to read or save data about the computer identity and user preferences of individuals visiting web pages. If pop-up windows irritate you during your browsing, you can manage those too.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Connection
  • Microsoft Windows with Internet Explorer
  1. Step 1

From the IE menu bar, select Tools option to display menu. From the drop-down sub-menu, select Internet Options.

  2. Step 2
Internet Options Window - General Tab
Internet Options Window - General Tab

In the Internet Options window, go to the General tab to empty the history folder of all browsed pages, which will temporarily free up disk space on your computer and clear all URL addresses in drop down area), click the Delete button (this may show as Clear History on older versions of IE and give you a Clear Files window) in the Browsing History area of the tab. If a Delete Browsing History window appears, you can select which type of files you wish to delete or choose Delete All to get rid of everything. Deleting everything at once will take a few seconds.

    - If you want to specify how many pages are saved in the history list, in the Browsing History area, select Settings button and on the next window change the Days To Keep History, which is the number of days that the history list keeps track of URLS for your entered pages. Set this to 1 if you only want the current day and previous day browsing to show in list or choose 7 for a week of history.

    - If you desire to set space size for your temporary internet files to increase the speed in which pages may re-load, from the Settings window, use the control of scrolling arrows next to Disk Space To Use to increase or decrease the size. Lower numbers will save less data (computer works faster, but web pages may load slower) and higher will save more. On older versions of IE, you may see a slider instead of a control, if this is the case to create more space to store files temporarily, move the slider to the right. To decrease the amount of space for storing files, move slider to the left.

  3. Step 3
    Internet Options Window - PrivacyTab
    Internet Options Window - PrivacyTab

If you wish to set cookies or pop-ups to on/off in most versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, you will need to move to the Security or Privacy tab while in the Internet Options window.

    - If it is under Security, click the Custom Level button and scroll to the Cookies section, and set the options as desired: disable - don't allow, enable - always allow, prompt - notify of option to allow each time. Be sure to click the OK button to save the new setting.

    - If it under Privacy, review the text shown for the slider to determine the setting you desire. You may also be able to change your pop-up windows setting on this tab near the bottom of the window. Be sure to click the OK button to save the new setting.

    NOTES:
If the cookies option is not seen on this window, search under the Help option for "cookies" to find out where the setting are in the version of IE you have.
If you do not see an option for Pop-Up Blocker, it may be in the list under Tools before Internet Options or on another tab, search Help to find our where it is.

  4. Step 4

Once everything is set as desired, click on the Cancel or OK button to close the Internet Options window.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using the REFRESH option on browser will insure you are looking at the latest version of a web page.
  • Files named with the word Cookies are created by web pages to read or save data about the computer identity and user preferences visiting the page. It is typically safe to delete these files as they may be recreated the next time you visit the site that added them to your computer.
