If you are thinking about going back to get your GED and just do not think you can do to lack of money, you may have options. Many individuals may find it hard to find jobs without a high school diploma or GED, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and other government agencies are aware of this and offer help. Some state and local government agencies of offer free classes, free books and in some cases a small grant to help a student pay bills while attending the GED program.

      Find out if you qualify: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and actively working towards a high school equivalency certificate (GED). Applicants that are 17 may only apply under special circumstances. Free classes and books are more available then grants to pay for your time time to take the classes and GED test. Those seeking grant help will have to meet income guidelines. Not all areas will have grant funding available. IF grant funding is not available they may be able to help financially in other areas.

      You will want to gather the school records that you already have. For instance did you go to school till the 10th grade or did you end your high school education in the 9th grade. In most cases you will need your school records if possible. If not, the agency you work with can help you get what you need.

      Go to your local career center funded by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. If you are unable to visit do to transportation issues a call will be sufficient, in the initial process. You will also want your last years income statement, social security card and government issued Identification with you.

  • If transportation is a issue grants may be available in your area to pay for car repairs, public transportation, or to purchase a computer with online availability to prepare for the GED exams.

  • If you are between the ages of 16 and 24 you may qualify to attend a free job training program that can help you get a GED or high school deployment. The program will also give you a choice of attending training for over a 100 different career paths. Ask for information of Job Corps at the career center or go to jobcorp.com.

  • Most grants will require applicant to check in with their appointed counselor to let them know how they are doing. Each grant will have different requirements.
