Love Apple Pie gets it name from the pink blush and the sweet tart taste that reminds one of biting into a juicy fresh apple. The tomato was called a love apple in Europe so the tomato ketchup adds to the name. I thought it was interesting to use ketchup as a spice but the result was a surprising fresh taste that is memorable. The ruffled pie crust also adds a special touch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup tomato ketchup
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Crust:
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • wax paper
  1. Step 1

Pour lemon juice over sliced apples in a bowl and stir. The apples will turn from brown back to their original fresh color. Add ketchup and sugar. Stir well to coat evenly. Add the flour, stir and let sit while preparing pie crust. The apples will have a lovely pink blush.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the pie crust by combining the flour, salt and cinnamon in a bowl. Add the vegetable oil and milk. Stir until it forms a ball. Divide in two halves. Put first half between two 12 inch sheets of wax paper. Roll out crust a little larger than pie pan. Remove top sheet and pick bottom sheet up by two corners. Lay over pie pan and remove wax paper. Adjust to fit pan. Do not trim edges.

  3. Step 3

Pour love apple pie filling into unbaked pie crust. Cut butter into about six pieces and place on pie filling. Roll out top crust in same method as before and lay over pie filling. Turn excess pie dough under along edges to form a raised rim. Pinch pie dough rim between thumb and first finger all around edge to form a ruffled crust. Cut steam vents with a knife or a cookie cutter if desired.

  4. Step 4

Bake at 400 degrees for about 35 minutes or until golden brown. The pie is done when the filling bubbles through the steam vents.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using a cookie cutter to cut a steam vent is another way to decorate a pie for a special holiday dessert.
