Step 1
Removing the Glass Wine Bottle LabelPick up a nice bottle of wine that you know the receiver will like and peel off the label by using a razor blade or knife. You could try soaking the label in water or lacquer thinner overnight for an easier removal. Once the label is removed, clean up any left over adhesive by wiping with a rag and a solvent such as paint thinner, alcohol, or lacquer thinner.

Step 2
Positioning the Glass Etching ResistUse a squeegee to smoothly place contact paper or a adhesive backed vinyl material over the wine bottle area to be etched.
-
Step 3
Cutting the Glass Etching StencilNow draw or stencil a black and white glass etching pattern over the contact paper or vinyl resist material that you placed on the glass. Make sure it is leveled and centered. Once draw out, begin to cut the pattern with a exacto knife and pull the cut areas out.

Step 4
Masking the Stencil Before EtchingMask the outer areas of the glass etching stencil to prevent over blast etching. Remember we only want the exposed areas on the stencil to be etched.

Step 5
Etching the Glass with A Desired ProcessNow take your pick of a etching process. There are a few different ways that you can chose to etch or engrave the glass to leave a permanent marking. One way is to use a glass etching cream that can be purchased in hobby stores such as "Armour Etch" or "Etch All". The second chose is to use a engraving tool such as a rotary Dremel tool. To etch the glass this way you would have to need a steady hand to follow the pattern though. The third way is to use a sandblaster which blasts high pressure abrasives that lightly chips the surface of the glass. Once chipped a unique frosted glass look reveals the shape of the stencil. This is the choice I used because it looks better than the cream and doesn't require as much steadiness required by the Dremel tool.
With a etching process selected, etch over the exposed areas of the stencil. For the glass etching cream, smoothly spread the liquid over the stencil. To sandblast, smoothly blast over the stencil making sure you fully cover the all exposed areas. -
Step 6
Clean Up StepAfter the wine glass appears to be etched, clean up and remove the stencil by pull areas with a exacto knife. Then just wash with water.
