Assembled Ikea Furniture

Ikea and similar modular furniture kits usually come with instructions but here is how to understand those instructions and how to prepare for assembling modular furniture.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hammer
  • #2 Phillips Screwdriver
  • #1 Phillips Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Utility knife
  • Other tools as per instructions.
  1. Step 1

Assuming that you have purchased your furniture the first step is to realize that most individuals are able to assemble Ikea and other modular furniture at home. Keep your confidence level up. Next have a willing partner. Many Ikea products require two people to assemble them. Choose a time when you can complete the modular furniture assembly in one session. Place a thick blanket on the floor to protect the Ikea furniture during assembly. Wear knee pads.
Using a utility knife carefully open the package, paying attention to warnings about where not not cut. If no warnings are present, use your fingers to open the boxes at the end.

  2. Step 2

Locate the instructions that came with your Ikea or other modular furniture and before assembling anything, scan through the whole process. Locate the package of parts and open it with your utility knife, placing the loose pieces in a baking pan. Push and group different sized parts toward the sides of the pan. Locate any tools that came with the parts.

  3. Step 3

Lay out the wooden pieces of the Ikea furniture or other modular furniture to be assembled in exactly the same manner as you see in the instructions. Locate any identifying holes, notches, etc that indicate which way the piece should lay on the floor. Take a look at the instruction manual and learn to recognize what the graphic instructions mean. An "X" through the image of a screw or part means next to another image with no "x" means: "don't use that part, but this one instead". Most modular furniture consists of a system of pins and round tumbler locks. The pins have a Phillips screw head (looks like an indented x) and the locks require a Phillips or flat head screwdriver. Typically vertical and horizontal wood pieces go together using this system of pins and locking tumblers.

  4. Step 4

If you have any questions call customer service. If not begin to complete the assembly step by step. Do not skip ahead unless directed to by the instructions. For some products you may be asked to skip ahead a few pages if using the piece, such as a drawer, in a different part of a cabinet. Finally, keep the Ikea or other modular furniture assembly enjoyable. Take frequent breaks if needed and have snacks. Depending on the size of the modular furniture assembly project it may take several hours.
