Choosing your door. Make sure it fits in your rough opening. Rough opening should be 2 1/2 inches wider than door blank itself or 1 inch wider than door jamb and 1/2 inch higher than total door jamb height. A 36 inch door takes a 38 1/2 inch opening. this extra width is important for adjustment and insulation. Also an adjustable threshold is important. It will help in your door operation and energy value.

Prepare rough opening. Make sure door fits. Caulk the bottom or seal plate. Put door in rough opening.

Make sure door sets evenly and level across seal. if seal is way off you might have to make full width shims to put under door.

If seal and door are relatively level you can start installation. check hinge side for plumbness. Shim plumb, shim where hinges are. Nail the hinge side. When nailing opening side make sure jamb has equal reveil along door. Make sure lock set will line up.. Complete nailing.

Remove inner hinge skrews and put longer skrews in through jamb into framing. you can also slightly adjust door this way to make it work better. Adjust threshold to make door operate better and to hae a tight energy efficient seal.
