1. Find out your true surname (last name). Family crests were made a long time ago so make sure you get your un altered original surname from your relatives. Many family's went through name changes for a variety of different circumstances.

2. Head to houseofnames.com. It's as simple as that. This website offers a completely free family crest search that includes a detailed description of where your family surname originated from and a little info about your family history.

3. Type your last name into the search field and then press "search for my name".

4. Copy and paste your family crest onto your desktop. Not all surnames will have an active family crest. Even a few family's are known for sharing a family crest.
