How to Program a Remote to Open a Liftmaster Gate

Liftmaster manufactures automatic gates that are placed at the end of a driveway and are used as an extra security layer for your home. The gates are controlled with a remote control, which has a code that is programmed into the receiver of the automatic gate. Once programmed, the remote control will open and close the gate. Several remote controls can be programmed to operate the gate. Each car at your residence can have a remote control, reducing the need of remembering to carry a remote around.       Open the receiver unit by prying open the plastic case with a screwdriver. You will see the receiver's circuit board.

      Press and release the "Learn" button on the right side of the circuit board within the case. The indicator light will turn on. When the "Learn" button is pressed, the system is ready to program the remote code into memory.

      Push the button on the remote control that you want to use to open the gate. The remote control may have up to three buttons that can be programmed for different gates. Choose the button you want to control the specific gate. The system will record the remote control code into memory, the indicator light will turn off and the system will exit the programming mode.

      Line up the top of the receiver case with the bottom of the case and press it until it snaps in place.

      Test the remote control by pressing the button you programmed. If the gate does not open, repeat the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can erase all of the codes stored in the receiver by pressing and holding the "Learn" button until the indicator light turns off. This will take approximately six seconds.
