If you left high school early, obtaining a General Education Diploma (G.E.D.) allows for greater overall professional opportunity. More than 500,000 individuals take the G.E.D exam each year. Some of the benefits of a G.E.D. include higher pay, more job availability, and easy acceptance into career colleges and universities.

Locate your state's Department of Education website to determine where and how you can take the G.E.D. test. In some states, you can register for the G.E.D. online, even though you'll have to visit a testing center to take the actual exam.

Confirm that the testing process is accredited through the American Council on Education (ACE). This is the only type of G.E.D. that will be accepted by future employers, colleges and universities.

Prepare yourself by using study materials and free resources to brush up on your skills in the exam's major content areas. The five major areas include language arts, writing, reading, social studies, and mathematics. One example of a free resource is the ACE's website, which provides sample G.E.D. questions.

When you're fully prepared, register for the G.E.D. exam by paying the required fee and selecting a test date at a testing center near you. After you've taken and passed the G.E.D., you'll receive your diploma and have further opportunity for growth in life.
