Instructions

    • 1

Purchase shade and sand specific grass seeds. St. Augustine and Bermuda seeds are your best options when planting in shady and sandy soil.

    • 2

Pour the grass seeds into a 5-gallon bucket for easy access. You can just scoop right out of the bag, but this gives you better access and easier control over the seeds.

    • 3

Scoop out a full coffee can's worth of grass seed and sprinkle the grass seed evenly onto the ground. You can till the ground a little bit to allow the soil to regain some moisture, but it is not necessary. Generally, you need to plant 16 to 22 seeds per square inch.

Do not water the grass too much as the shady area holds in a lot more water than sunny areas. In hot weather, your grass needs about 1 inch of water per week so once a week watering is recommended. In dry, hot weather, your grass could need up to 2 1/2 inches of water per week.

    • 5

Stay off the grass for at least two weeks as the new seedlings begin to grow.
