Preparation for painting around windows is important, whether you are repainting the interior or exterior with a spray gun. Taping off areas to avoid paint transfer is the best solution. Leaving windows uncovered will allow paint overspray to coat the surface of the glass. There is a straightforward method of removing the paint involving a little paint thinner and soapy water. This is a do-it-yourself job that is manageable by most homeowners in a few minutes time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pour a small amount of paint thinner on a rag. Wipe the paint overspray on the glass with the rag. Allow it to soak in a minute or two.

  2. Step 2

Hold a razor blade at a 45-degree angle from the window and run it over the glass. Keep the surface moist with paint thinner and scrape all of the paint loose with the razor. Wipe the glass with the rag again to remove the loose paint particles.

  3. Step 3

Mix 1/4 cup of liquid detergent with a gallon of warm water. Wipe the window with a sponge soaked in the soap and water mixture. Rinse with clear water, then dry the glass with paper towels.

  4. Step 4

Spray the glass with window cleaner and wipe with paper towels. The glass should be paint and streak free.

Tips & Warnings
  • Preparation for unavoidable overspray is the easiest way to avoid the problem. Find out the best preparation methods for exterior painting at house-painting-info.com. (See Resource.)
  • Check whether the paint thinning product you will use is designed for oil-based or latex paint. Turpentine will work well for oil-based paint and rubbing alcohol can be used for latex.
  • Use gloves to avoid contact of paint thinner with the skin.
  • Keep interior areas well ventilated.
