Most spiders won't bother you, but a few--such as the black widow and the brown recluse--can cause you serious damage if they bite. Because they're so small, you might not even notice the spider or the bite as it's happening; by the time you find the spider bite, it's too late to do anything but go to the hospital to be treated. Fortunately, eucalyptus in any form makes an eco-friendly, economical, pleasant-smelling spider repellent.
Things You'll Need
- Eucalyptus oil
- Cotton balls
- Dried eucalyptus leaves
- Glue traps
Add 1/4 to 1 tsp. of eucalyptus oil--how much you use depends on how strong your oil is--to your laundry next time you wash your sheets. The sheets will come out smelling good to you and absolutely repellent to spiders.
Sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus oil on cotton balls and scatter them underneath the bed and in your drawers to help deter spiders.
Scatter dried whole eucalyptus leaves in your drawers to help deter spiders; you can also scatter them under your bed if you're not worried about mistakenly sweeping them up when you sweep under the edges of the bed. If you don't have access to whole eucalyptus leaves, tie crushed eucalyptus inside a layer or two of cheesecloth, then use the bundle as a drawer satchel to repel the spiders. You can do the same thing with eucalyptus tea bags; just make sure they contain pure eucalyptus herb and nothing else.
Lay out "glue traps" or sticky boards, available from most home improvement stores, if spiders still insist on entering your bed and drawers. Scatter the boards around the spider-infested area, replacing them as the spiders become trapped on them and die.
Tips & Warnings
- Make sure you're using actual eucalyptus oil, not synthetic derivatives.
