How to Decorate on Top of Cupboards
The top of cupboards or cabinets offer a unique platform for decorating. In many homes, cupboards in the kitchen do not reach the ceiling, leaving just enough space to put up some decorative items that will enhance the look of your kitchen. It's not just kitchen cupboards that can have decor placed on top of them, either. Any cupboard or cabinet that has room on top can benefit from some decorative accessories.

Clean the top of the cupboards. Use a rag to remove any dust, then check for other stains or grime. Use hot soapy water to get rid of any other dirt.

Prepare the cupboards. If your cupboards or cabinets have a crown molding around the top of them, this could block the bottom half of whatever you are going to put up there. Consider placing some small pieces of wood or boxes on the top of the cupboard to raise the height of your decor even with the top edge of the molding.

Decide on a theme or look for your cupboard or cabinet decorations. If you just throw unrelated items on top of the cupboards, it is going to look like you are using that area for storage rather than for decoration. Instead, choose a theme that matches the colors or decor of your room.

Choose your cabinet decorations. The items should be large enough to be easily seen, and relate to your colors or theme. For example, if you have a red and black retro kitchen, you will want to choose items that complement this theme, such as a vintage Coke tin or a Felix the Cat cookie jar. You could also display a collection of items, such as ceramic pitchers. Displaying a collection works best in a kitchen that does not have an obvious theme.

Accent your items with some silk greenery. Plants add a fresh look to any room, but live plants will probably die on top of a cupboard. Instead, choose realistic silk vines or other green silk plants.

Grouping items, then leaving a space between groups, creates an upscale look to your decor. Try grouping two items around a silk plant. Group items of different heights to make the grouping more visually appealing.
