How to Plant Grass on a Burn

Sun scorched spots on your lawn can be an eyesore, and in some communities, can actually qualify you for a homeowner's association fine. The yellowing, browning, and even bald patches on what was once your gorgeous grassy yard can be unpreventable no matter how well you maintain your lawn. The summer sun is often overwhelmingly powerful, and sometimes the grass just can't hold up. You may not be able to stop your grass from burning, but you can repair the burned spots with relative ease.

Things You'll Need

• Water
• Shovel
• Organic fertilizer
• Sod
• Grass seeds

Instructions

Prevention

1. Avoid using harsh chemical pesticides and herbicides on your lawn in the summer, as these products can increase the chances of your lawn burning.

2. Water your lawn with at least an inch of water a week, divided into two or three sessions.

3. Avoid using artificial fertilizers that kill the beneficial organisms in your soil, as these organisms will help maintain the health and strength of your grass. Many fertilizers can make plants grow quickly, but the plants are not as healthy.

Reaction

1. Use the shovel to dig out the damaged spots of grass in your lawn.

2. Sprinkle organic fertilizers such as manure over the now-bare areas. The manure will make great fertilizer, and will feed beneficial organisms such as earthworms that aerate the soil and promote healthy grass growth.

3. Place a piece of sod over the burned spot and step on it to pack it into place.

4. Sprinkle seed over the bare area if you are looking for a more cost effective solution then sod, though seed will take longer to grow.

5. Water your entire lawn with at least an inch of water a week, in two or three sessions a week.

Tips & Warnings

• Water before the sun comes up or after it goes down to prevent the water from heating in the sun and burning your grass. This also makes your water go further as less water evaporates before it is absorbed.
