Stackable food dehydrators allow users to make jerky, dried fruit and vegetables and a variety of dehydrated treats that are healthy and retain excellent flavor. Food dehydrators use heated air to remove the moisture from foods, keeping the essential vitamins and minerals while removing fat and preserving the food so that it lasts longer. There is a wide variety of stackable dehydrators on the market, though all use the same basic technique.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Warm water
  • Knife
  • Fruits, vegetables or meats
  • Seasoning or salt
  1. Step 1

Rinse your food dehydrator plates with warm water to remove any dust or debris that may have accumulated. Do this before each use of the dehydrator to keep it clear of foreign contaminants.

  2. Step 2

Slice your fruit or meat to the desired thickness. Thicker cuts will take longer to dehydrate and may not fit in all dehydrators. Strips between 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick work well.

  3. Step 3

Salt or season the food. By adding these before the process begins, the flavors will permeate the entire stackable cooker and fill the house with their aroma during the cooking process.

  4. Step 4

Place the food on each tray and stack these inside the cooker. Put thicker cuts on the top trays to evenly distribute heat and equalize cooking times.

  5. Step 5

Lock the lid on the dehydrator and set the desired cooking time. Meats may take up to a day, while fruit is usually done in a few hours. For best results, cook foods that take a similar time to completely dehydrate.

  6. Step 6

Test your food with a toothpick or by taste. Press a toothpick into dehydrated meat. If the toothpick comes out clean, the meat is done. Fruits and vegetables should be al dente, their flesh giving easily to your teeth or fork.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to use only similar products in each batch so that your sliced apples don't taste like peppered jerky.
  • Make sure to wash your dehydrator after every use to prevent mold or bacterial buildup which will ruin the appliance.
