How to Attach a Bookcase Headboard to a Bed Frame

A great-looking headboard is an important accessory in a bedroom to anchor the bed and turn it into the real focal point of the bedroom. One way to gain great storage space, plus provide a great headboard is to use a bookcase headboard behind your bed. While it is possible to simply place the bookcase headboard behind the top of the bed and leave it standing unattached, most people prefer to have it firmly attached. Things You'll Need

  • Bed frame
  • Bookcase headboard
  • Drill
  • 4 washers/wing nuts/1/4-inch-20 carriage bolts or 4 metal dowels with four locking screws
  • Crescent wrench for carriage bolts or flathead screwdriver for locking screws/dowels

  1. Instructions Using Carriage Bolts

      If the bookcase headboard is not predrilled, you need to drill the holes. Begin by marking the spot where the metal bed frame meets the wood on the bottom of the bookcase headboard. There should be slots for two bolts on each side of the bed frame.

      Drill out the holes for the carriage bolts.

      Line up the metal bed frame with the bookcase headboard. Fasten with carriage bolt. Use a washer between the wood and the nut to protect the wood. Repeat for all bolts. Tighten with crescent wrench.

      Place box spring and mattress on bed frame.

    Instructions Using Metal Dowels

      If the bookcase headboard is not predrilled, you need to drill the holes. Begin by marking the spot where the metal bed frame meets the wood on the bottom of the bookcase headboard. There should be slots for two bolts on each side of the bed frame.

      Drill out the holes for the metal dowels.

      Put four metal dowels into the holes in the bed frame legs--two on each leg, one upper and one lower on each side. Screw in until the threads no longer show and are just below the surface.

      Line up the headboard with the bed frame. You may need two people to line up the dowels with the holes evenly.

      After metal dowels are securely in the holes, put in four locking screws into the dowels. There is an arrow on top of the locking screw showing which way it turns. Turn each locking screw one-half turn.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure bolts are tight so headboard does not wobble.

  • Many bookcase headboards are not intended to be attached to the bed frame. Instead, they sit behind the bed frame as an independent piece of furniture.
