Rosemary is a perennial herb in regions with winter temperatures above 20 degrees. In other regions with extended freezing weather, rosemary is an annual herb. Gardeners in these regions may opt to bring potted rosemary plants indoors over the winter season. Keep your rosemary plant vibrant and healthy with regular, light pruning. Pruning will help the rosemary retain its shape and will provide a cooking gardener with fresh rosemary to use in savory dishes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Check the rosemary plant carefully in the spring if the plant has been outside during the winter season. Use the pruning shears to cut away any dead stems or stems that have damage.

  2. Step 2

Shape the rosemary plant lightly as desired, using the pruning shears. Prune at any time during the growing season except when the rosemary plant is blooming. Cut the stems at least 2 to 3 inches from the ends, at any point along the stems.

  3. Step 3

Prune the rosemary plant more severely--and harvest fresh rosemary at the same time--at least 45 days prior to the first expected autumn frost. Cut off up to half of each stem, at any point along the stem.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many gardeners use rosemary plants to make attractive topiaries because the plants tolerate severe pruning.
